Mathematics Standard 2

Year 12 · Stage 6 · NSW Mathematics syllabus

Types of relationships

Construct and interpret graphs of practical non-linear relationships; solve simultaneous linear equations graphically and algebraically; model and interpret break-even points and real-world applications.

2 sub-topics

Non-right-angled trigonometry

Apply the sine rule, cosine rule and area formula to non-right-angled triangles; solve bearing and radial survey problems.

4 sub-topics

Rates and ratios

Convert between units and compound units; solve problems involving rates (fuel consumption, heart rate, energy, speed); divide quantities in a given ratio; apply scale factors to lengths, areas and volumes of similar figures.

2 sub-topics

Investments and loans

Apply simple and compound interest to investments and loans; calculate present and future values; analyse shares, dividends and reducing-balance loans.

2 sub-topics

Annuities

Calculate the future and present value of annuities using recurrence relations and tables; apply to superannuation accumulation, loan repayments and retirement drawdowns.

2 sub-topics

Bivariate data analysis

Construct and interpret scatterplots; describe the direction, form and strength of associations; estimate and interpret Pearson's correlation coefficient r; fit a line of best fit and use it for prediction.

2 sub-topics

The normal distribution

Standardise values using z-scores; interpret and compare z-scores across distributions; apply the empirical (68–95–99.7%) rule to find proportions and expected counts within normally distributed data.

2 sub-topics

Network flow

Analyse directed networks with capacities; apply the maximum-flow minimum-cut theorem to find the maximum flow through a network.

2 sub-topics

Critical path analysis

Represent and analyse projects as activity networks; perform forward and backward scans to find earliest and latest start times; identify the critical path and minimum project completion time.
